Competitors believe that “students do not leave their constitutional rights at the schoolhouse door” (Lichtenstein 2). They say that “dress codes violate, or go against, kids’ freedom of expression. “That right is guaranteed in the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution” (“The Right Fit” 2). We hear what they are saying but we do not agree with them. We do not believe that dress codes go against freedom of expression. We do not take away their right to be individuals; we limit one thing and only one thing, what they wear. They can express themselves in other ways. For example, kids can paint their fingernails, they can have their own hairstyle, or they can bring a purse to school that makes them unique. There are a lot of other things that kids can do if they want to stand out, uniforms are just one thing that is being restricted and for many good reasons.
